SUPPORT THE SHELTER

Tasty fund-raiser in aid of the shelter
With a call to help save lives, The Shelter for Battered Women and Children is calling on the public to support its fundraiser that started on November 15 and ends December 15.

Interested persons can do so by purchasing delectable charcuterie (cured meats) boards and vegetarian cups for prices ranging from TTD$195 to TTD$415. Orders can be placed by emailing the two addresses below and collected at Queen’s Hall, or delivered for a small fee based on location. Proceeds will go towards the care of residents at the facility.

To be served-up on the boards to taste and test are cheeses, pickles, sausages, crackers, and other delights consistent with charcuterie boards, explained Shelter officials Sherron Harford and Lilia Mootoo. The three boards offered are The Date Night Special, Just a Few of Us and Impress Your Friends.

Harford explained that the shelter is seeing some light as more compassion and support has been coming their way, but there is a lot more that needs to be done to adequately provide the true calibre and band of services necessary.

The Shelter for Battered Women and Children was established in 1987 as a safe haven for women and children, who are victims of all forms of domestic violence.

Our mission is to support victims in their transition from victims to survivors and survivors into success stories.

Created in response to growing awareness of domestic violence and a greater need for support of victims of domestic violence, the shelter operates a safe house, providing accommodation for residents, staff quarters, a counselling room, children’s activity room, and training room. As a registered charity, the facility is run by an executive committee of volunteers.

Although it receives an annual subvention from the Government, funds generated are usually inadequate, given the growing need and the extent of the services provided to victims of domestic violence.
