These prints are part of a series entitled colonial photography. I have used old photographs taken in the early 20th century of East Indian women dressed in expensive representations of the clothing style of that community of Trinidadian society at the time. East Indians came to Trinidad as indentured labourers after the emancipation of West African slaves in 1834 and the subsequent abandoning of the plantations. This racial group has and still continues to play an important role in Trinidadian society through culture, religion, politics, to name a few areas. This series was conceptualised for a joint exhibition featuring myself and a fine art photographer, Christine Norton, where looked back at colonial times in Trinidad nostalgically and strove to re-contextualise the history through a modern as well as self-interpretive lens. Exhibited in “False Narratives”, 2020 at The Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago.
